Mull the Mural

Writer's picture: kelvinkelvin

Just completed this mural bringing together some ceramic shapes, animal reliefs, flower and Pacific Island hut relief (made by Foketi) and tile mosaic. The mural is over a bench outside, in our work space, that will be part of the 'no frills' food and drink prep area for future outdoor activities we have.

Overall I'm pleased with the result because there are some interesting elements within the mural that I'd like to develop further in future work, such as the ceramic reliefs and the frieze at the top third of the mural. I like the use of the horizontal tiles and the hint of movement given to the stars by the triangular white tiles on the side of each of the star points. This

is something worth following up.

Foketi's Island Hut and flower relief in the central frieze of the mural are quite wonderful. I hope she will get to do some more we can use in future work. These reliefs are framed within unglazed and dry glazed terra-cotta shapes that I had lying around for some time. I thought I'd make use of them in the mural. There are a couple of things I am not pleased about with them. Firstly, their colour has been dulled through the grouting process as some grout covered the pieces and the rough surface of the pieces meant that I was unable completely remove the grout resulting in the dullness. Secondly, I think the shapes could be placed better throughout the central frieze.

On starting this mural I did not have a specific idea or image in mind of what I would do other than I was going to incorporate the ceramic shapes, Foketi's reliefs and the animal reliefs in the mural. Make a start, use the skills you have acquired to date, learn and adapt as you go. The journey of a thousand kilometers starts with the first step. Jumping from an airplane is not the only way to get a thrill. The creative arts, all of them, require a degree of risk taking, can show us things about ourselves and contribute to the well-being of others.

Thanks for taking a look at what I have done. I appreciate being able to share with you and look forward to doing so again.
